“Women in Islam,” focuses on selected countries in the Horn of Africa which are most affected by the recent surge of militant and restrictive interpretations of the Islamic religion, leading to an invigorated and further entrenched environment of female subjugation.
While the issue will focus on Sudan, Somalia and Somaliland, the SIHA Journal will influence Muslim women in other countries in and outside of the Horn of Africa where militant interpretations of Islam also affect women’s lives negatively.
Thus, “Women in Islam” is about disseminating alternative discourses of Islamic interpretation on women and human rights and doing so through an accessible medium which will appeal to a broad audience of women and men. The journal maintains a balance between education and humour and contains carefully selected original contributions and essays, book reviews, short stories, art, scholarly reflection, and interviews. It will specifically touch on women’s rights in Islam, the veil, marriage and divorce, adultery, women’s political participation, and women’s status in society. The thoughts and research presented in the journal are generated from credible Islamic scholars and writers both from the Horn of Africa and across the globe.
The first Edition of the Journal was officially launched in Khartoum Sudan and Nairobi Kenya on 17th July and 2nd October respectively. Both gatherings brought together activist, academicians, writers, journalists, civil society actors and students and a number of copies were purchased. On both occasions, readings from the journal were taken by friends and staff of SIHA followed by an open discussion.
