November 28, 2015 (JUBA) – Members of the United Nations Security Council condemned in the “strongest” terms Thursday’s attack by unknown assailants on the residence of the Ngok Dinka paramount chief in Abyei.

One Interim Force for Abyei (UNISFA) peacekeeper and a child died.

The members of the Security Council, in a statement, expressed their deepest condolences and sympathy to the family of the peacekeeper killed, the Ethiopian government as well as the family of the child who was killed.

“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms all attacks and provocations against UNISFA by armed actors,” it observed.

It called on the governments of the two Sudans to swiftly investigate this attack, with the assistance of UNISFA, and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Those responsible for the attack, the UN stressed, must be held accountable.

Meanwhile, the Security Council members reiterated their support for UNISFA, as mandated in its resolution 2230 (2015), and reiterated that, in accordance with relevant resolutions, the Abyei Area shall be demilitarised from any forces, as well as armed elements of the local communities, other than UNISFA and the Abyei Police Service.
