Government Will Not Release Political Detainees: VP

 

The government of the Republic of South Sudan will not release the political detainees who are linked with an “attempted coup” in December last year, South Sudan’s Vice President James Wani Igga has said.

WAU, 23 January 2014[Gurtong] – “We in South Sudan have our national governing constitution.  We have law that guards us and if any one appears to break the laws, he or she must be investigated by the committee and law court so that any release depends judgment,” Igga told the press before leaving Wau stadium on Wednesday.

“We will not simply discharge them, they have to face law as investigations are now continuing,” he said.

Igga however said the government is ready to release the coup suspects any time, saying it will be based on the fact finding recommendations that will come out from the law.

He said the government needs to know who is responsible for those killed during the aftermath of the foiled “coup attempt.”

The issue of releasing the political detainees remains a key demand of the anti-government delegation in Addis Ababa in order to swiftly sign a ceasefire agreement with the Juba government.
