JUBA, 3 January 2013 [Gurtong] - Rebels loyal to former South Sudanese Vice President Dr. Riek Machar seized Bor town last Tuesday after flushing SPLA out of the state capital.

“These forces are now retreating back,” army spokesperson Phillip Aguer told press in Juba Friday. “I am sure this evening they will move to the north of Bor.”

“The SPLA is moving with confidence. We have enough forces who will defeat them within 24 hours,” Aguer said.

Aguer said that, the SPLA and the rebels are engaged currently in a battle since morning today.
Bor is now four days in the hands of the rebels since they seized the town on Tuesday.

It is the second time the rebels seized the capital after they captured it on 17 December 2013.

The fight highlights the current political crisis within the country that started on 15 December 2013 in Juba following a coup attempt in which government accused former Vice president Dr Riek Machar and several other politicians of masterminding.

The ongoing fight however came after the two worrying parties; government and Riek Machar were called by the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to cease hostilities and use peaceful mechanisms to sort out their differences.

Delegations of the two parties are currently in Addis Ababa for talks.

However, observers have warned the ongoing fight may likely jeopardize the peace talks.
