For Rose Nathike, running is a way of life. First the South Sudanese athlete ran to flee the war in Sudan. Then she trained at her refugee camp in northern Kenya. Finally she beat the odds to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics. FRANCE 24 brings you the incredible story of Rose Nathike, the flag bearer of the Refugee Olympic Team in Rio and a member of a family torn apart by war.

Young South Sudanese athlete Rose Nathike lived the Olympic dream when she ran the 800 metres in Rio in 2016. Like a handful of other athletes, the young woman did not compete under the banner of her country, plagued by civil war, but under that of the Olympics.

"When we entered the Maracana stadium in Brazil, the people were really welcoming. It made us feel that we were human beings”, she says, her voice cracking with emotion.
