The Belarusian President has paid an official visit to Sudan this week. Alexander Lukashenko was welcomed at Khartoum International Airport by his Sudanese counterpart Omar al-Bashir. The politicians met to give an impetus to partner ties between the countries.
Belarus-Sudan common interests can be divided into four major areas:
– Industry, mainly cooperation in mechanical engineering.
Belarusian machinery has been used in Sudan since Soviet times. BelAZ trucks are involved in the country’s mining industry, Belshina products are in demand. The first 17 MAZ trucks were imported in 2016. A Belarus-Sudan business forum resulted in a contract for supplying Sudan with 50 tractors. The next step is setting up a joint venture.
– Agriculture.
The agriculture sector of Sudan makes up 84 million hectares and employs 80 percent of the population. However, agriculture generates about 20 percent of the country’s GDP. This means ample opportunities for Belarusian engineering and technologies. Amkodor is ready to provide the country’s agriculture sector with grain driers. Belarus is ready to train specialists in milk and meat processing and even create a pilot farm in Sudan.
– The mining industry.
Sudan is rich in copper, ore, marble deposits and is the third country on the continent in terms of gold mining. Belarus is ready to provide the country with specialists and mining machinery and assist in the further exploration and production of oil.
– Healthcare.
Belarus is ready to help Sudan with medicines and production technologies, inviting Sudanese pharmacologists to Minsk. In addition, future doctors will be able to receive education in Belarus.
As a result, the business meetings resulted in contracts worth 50 million dollars, which exceeds the countries’ annual trade turnover, and important political documents, such as a treaty on friendly relations and cooperation.
