President Jacob Zuma has withdrawn the 800 South African National Defence Force soldiers who have been participating in an African Union/United Nations peackeeping mission in Darfur, Sudan.

In statement released by the Presidency, the president said that the troops would leave by April 1.

He thanked the soldiers for "their participation in bringing peace in Darfur."

The troops were deployed in Darfur in 2008 to bring peace to the region following fierce fighting there.

Despite the president's claims of there being peace in Darfur, fighting still rages in the region.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) last month expressed concern over the impact of the fighting in Darfur. OCHA said that 19 000 civilians had fled the area following fighting there.
